Teeth whitening is a convenient and affordable way to make over the smile. This is one of the main reasons why this cosmetic dental technique is so popular among people of all ages. Teeth Whitening May Not Work
Teeth whitening is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic procedures today. Therefore, it would make sense to assume it will work for your goals. It might not, and this is important to discuss ahead of time. The mechanism of teeth whitening includes the application of a professional-grade peroxide gel. This gel permeates the porous surface of enamel and breaks up stain molecules that have accumulated inside. As these molecules are dismantled, more light can reflect off of enamel, and the whiter teeth appear.
We can lift most stains out of enamel with the right peroxide solution. However, some stains don’t originate with food particles. Stains can also occur inside of teeth, such as when a person takes tetracycline during a developmental stage of life. These stains may not lighten.
Whiter Teeth May Not be the Ultimate Goal
When we consult with patients about cosmetic treatment, we want to know the end-goal. In some cases, a brighter smile is the answer. If there are other aesthetic concerns, such as a turned tooth or a substantial variance in the size of some teeth compared to others, whitening teeth will only improve the smile so much.
