Enjoy your visit to the dental office with sedation dentistry

IV Sedation Brunswick, MEDr. James A. Oshetski of Brunswick, ME is a professional who works regularly with adult patients who have dental anxieties. It is not uncommon for a patient to have fears about visiting the dental chair. Some patients have anxieties because they fear discomfort during their procedures. Other patients may have had a negative experience in the dental office in the past. In some cases, patients have an issue with others in their personal space. Whatever the reason, patients can ask about sedation dentistry options available to them at the practice of Dr. James A. Oshetski.

What sedation methods are available?

Our practice offers the following sedation methods for patient consideration:

• Nitrous oxide – nitrous oxide is the simplest form of sedation for patients with mild to moderate anxieties. Nitrous oxide is a gas that is administered through the nose to almost immediately relax a patient. It can be reversed with the administration of oxygen through the same mask.

• Oral conscious sedation – prescription medications are prescribed to patients prior to their dental appointment. The patients take the medication orally approximately thirty minutes before they are to be at the dental office. They arrange transportation and will be drowsy though awake and coherent through their appointment.

• IV sedation – sedation medication can also be administered through an IV. A needle is inserted into the arm of the patient which allows the medication to be delivered directly into the bloodstream. This provides long-term sedation and can be great for patients with moderate to severe anxieties.

• General anesthetics – for patients with severe anxieties, options such as general anesthetics may be considered. This is the same type of anesthetic used for patients undergoing surgical procedures at the hospital. Many times this is not necessary, but it is available if needed.
